World’s first triple-layer Blu-ray Disc media featuring large 100GB recording storage capacity.Japanese electronics maker Sharp said Friday it will release a recordable Blu-ray disc named  VR-100BR1 this month that can store as much as four seasons of a television drama series. The world’s first triple-layer disc has a capacity of 100 gigabytes, twice as much as the dual-layer discs now on the market.437220

Like most cool things, these discs will drop first in Japan on July 30.Sharp is expected to market the discs for $55 each(5,000 yen).

This disc media product conforms to the new BDXL™ format specification that extends the storage capacity of Blu-ray Discs to 100GB, twice the 50GB storage capacity of existing dual-layer discs.Boasting 100GB of storage space, the VR-100BR1 are labeled BD-R, meaning one-time writable discs. But each disc should be able to hold up to 12 hours of digital TV programming. However, buying these discs only seem worth it if you already have a Sharp BD-HDW700 OR BD-HDW70 Blu Ray Player since they’re the only models that will support the VR-100BR1 discs.
